A Bitch Called Irma

by Orange Grove

/

about

Hurricane Irma devastated the Caribbean in September of 2017, especially the island of St. Maarten/St. Martin which saw its eye. This direct hit by the strongest hurricane to ever be recorded in recent history, crippled our whole island terribly. This is a song we wrote about it.

lyrics

It was a Thursday
Rumblings of a system brewing off the coast of Africa
Keeping an eye on the hurricane tracker
Friday, depression has turned to a storm
Her name is Irma, she’s moving along
Predictions have her coming too close for comfort
With sustained winds in levels that revel an old foe we know way too well
Nobody needs another Luis round here
Fingers crossed she stays clear
One day to go, running round the rock, looking for those who still got the stock
Plywood, water, batteries, canned food
This can’t be, half a day left a whole new category
Sustained winds of 185
direct hit
This some real shit

Facing the biggest and baddest disaster
We growing bigger and stronger and faster
Day by day hour by hour
We moving on said we’re feeling the power
We growing bigger and stronger and faster
We staying one step ahead of disaster
Day by day hour by hour
We moving on said we feeling the power

Life is rough in the middle of the eye
Holding your loved ones
It’s all passing you by
You don’t care bout the little stuff you focus on the big
Holding little hands that are shaking like a twig
Then the wind starts howling the sea starts storming
Hoping your house can just keep performing
Everything may be gone
You might have to share, beg or borrow
Just thanking the stars
There will be a Tomorrow

The devil is a force of nature
Abusing our mother it’s not hard to hate ya
You were not undercover when you came and played us
But you’re never ever stronger than a true creator
Yeah you had incredible power
Thunder rain and pain showers
But the soul of the island is still so sweet never sour
I’m rockin rockin these lyrics for the Rock and its spirit
Though the weather was serious you cannot make us fear it
So now we’re blocking you period
no mocking I'm Fury and
we’re the swords of survival
Now you’re not so mysterious
You can break peoples’ hearts take em lock em you bare it
But in the name of the Lord you cannot break their spirits

Facing the biggest and baddest disaster
We growing bigger and stronger and faster
Day by day hour by hour
We moving on said we’re feeling the power
We growing bigger and stronger and faster
We staying one step ahead of disaster
Day by day hour by hour
We moving on said we feeling the power

Can’t just stand around and be sad and down waiting for something good to come around
We the best that we have around
So come gather round
Man woman child every hand around
SXM STRONG you know we got this
West Indians you know we got this
CARIBBEAN STRONG you know got this
So tune in and watch us rock this

Orange Grove Den Haag, Netherlands

Many tours and a few albums later, OG is finally at their moment of truth. Somebody close to the band fills us in: “They are about to drop something big and heavy, so naturally it will make a very loud thumping noise and even people who were not paying attention will hear it.” ... more
